Thanks tj. Just had a look around Moates site and found the instructions of which you speak. I also looked at Moates recomended TunerPro Rt. I guess I will just have to jump in with both feet. I was able to download 'TunerPro RT' on to my home computor [with windows 98] and then transfer the program via floppy to my old laptop like I did with 'winaldl'. The old lap top [that I aquired for tuning purposes only] does not seem to want to read it, stating that "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'TunerPro RT.lnk' refers to is unavailable". I have a feeling that I am going to buy a bunch of stuff and then either not be able to understand it all or melt my engine down
I would like to learn, I feel I would also become a "Tuning addict" as I am a bit ****.

Nah, its not that bad. There is a lot of information here and on other sites. Try the thirdgen.org website as there is a tremendous amount of information there. Also Moates has a forum there as well, then there is the diy efi site as well for more information.
00fxd - tjwong is right. Once you get the concepts down - Spark Advance (SA), fuel tables (VE) etc it is simple as using MS Excel. The one item would be getting your present bin (eprom image) into your laptop so you can edit it. If your laptop has a USB port have you considerd a flash drive to transfer stuff instead of the floppy?
The model year of the ECM should not be a issue because the Ostrich pretends it is the eprom. The hardest part is making sure you will be able to plug it in to the eprom socket. Craig Moates (moates.net) can help with the adapter you would need. As a example I use a 1227747 TBI ECM (my 84 has two TBs). I removed the original socket and replaced it with a zif socket and I have an adapter that plugs into the zif socket and then the Ostrich connector plugs into the adapter.

To install the zif socket into the 7747 is there soldering involved? Is there no adapter that allows the ostrich to be plugged into the existing socket?
I dont think so. GM made the eprom socket to use a carrier. The only way is to unsolder it and solder in a new one. It is not hard.. The hardest part is getting the plastic coating that GM put on. I just used some acetone and a Q-Tip.
I got a solder remover tool from Radio Shack. It is basically a soldering iron with a sucker ball on it. You just need to be careful while removing the solder from the pins. The pads are on the small side and can come loose or melt if too much heat is applied. You could also check with Craig Moates and see if he will put a socket in it for ya. He has a installation service for $25. If you are not comfortable with doing it yourself that is another route to take.
