Default Ordered a Craig Moates Ostrich

I just ordered one of Craig's Ostrich units. I'm hoping this puppy will make tuning a bit less time consuming w/o the need to burn chips for every single little change.

For anyone that hasn't seen it before...

I bought one a year ago and wish I would have started this way. I have the whole unit essentially permanently mounted into the ECM up under the dash and just use the USB cord when necessary. the battery will last 75 years or so... so now I don't have to deal with chips at all. I just plug in the laptop when I want to datalog or make changes, and I leave the ostrich in the car at all other times.

It was money well spent.

That ostrich is friggin awesome.. SO I could use that even with my '85 instead of burning chips all the time.. Says it's 2732A compatible, and uses TunerRT/Tunercat.. I'll have to get it... And here I was thinking of swappign to a '167 ECM.. woohoo...

I'm glad to hear that. Have you tried datalogging while making changes? I'm curious if the logging software stays connected or not.

scorp,
you will LOVE it!!
i drive around for hours at a time with the ostrich in emulation mode (tunerpro), logging with datamaster on another usb port and wbo2 on the serial port. i have a comms error maybe once every 2 hours of continuous use, and even then its a minor issue like the wbo2 software might need to be restarted, no biggie..
The 'O' is simply awesome... Real time, on the fly tuning!!

You made the mistake of peaking my interest here. That is the next thing I want to be able to do. What WBO2 did you decide on? How do you reference your O2 readings to you other "normal" datalogging?

I've seen hacks out there for $6E code, to monitor a WB on an unused channel right from normal datalogging software. I would love to get that working with $32B code.

i don't bring the wb data into the ecm and them out the aldl like the guys who use the '$6E WB hack'.. I just run the WB (Zeitronix) software in another window and correlate it to the datamaster data.. Not quite as neat, but its no problem.

Joe I suspect will probably be workin with my friend Paul to get that tune done. That is who I am going with tomorrow.

I fired up the Ostrich tonight (not in the car though, its pouring out) and the drivers installed great on my laptop. I ran TunerCat RT Tuner and it worked on the first try. I loaded my current tune onto it and will pop it into the car for the drive to the shop tomorrow.

Should be good to go tomorrow.

So once you get a tune that works good for you. does the laptop have to be hooked up for it to emulate? also i'm installing a vortech supercharger kit and it has a MSD ign. could i use the ostrich to set the timing instead of useing the MSD? also how do i know if this will work on my "92 LT1?

No, you can leave the Ostrich by itself hooked up to the ECM. The AAA battery will keep the program stored for 75 years.

It will "work" with your 92 and yes timing can be programmed with it as that is part of your ECM's ability, but your ECM is located in the engine bay making things a bit tougher.

Scorp, sounds like this gizmo is like the Prominator. On the fly tuning changes via a cable. No more chip burning, etc.????

I checked the site and didn't see a list of applications, just the chip numbers. Is this how Craig cross references the product?

I have been using the Ostrich for about 4 months now. The best part is emulation mode. My setup is a little different because I am using the 7747 in my 84. FWIW - The 7747 is basically a truck ecm. I basically need to start from scratch on the tune - ground ZERO. The O was benefical in getting my idle parameters dialed in while sitting in the garage. While at the track with my son I was adjusting the timing and he was able to run our best 1/4 time of 12.95 after a couple of adjustments. The coolest part with emulation mode is you are able to futz with one or two parameters (or as many as you want) and when the parameter(s) are modified it is immediately updated - true real time tuning.... I use TunerPro RT, TunerCat and WinALDL for datalogging.

You will like it. I have it plugged it to the prom socket. Like ben73 it is there all the time.

I am using the Ostrich now as well. I had some issues with my trusty Pocket Romulator 2 working on certain truck ECMs in the early 90 model years. And it had issues in the 92/93 LT1 ECMs as well.

Who can help me understand what to do next? I have a 7747 based efi with a Holley throttle body on my 400 in my '65. All sensors, no egr. I have a mail order prom and it seems to run ok. I've had it hooked up to my laptop using winaldl and the blm's could be a lot closer to 128. I would like to learn to tune on my own using an Ostrich etc. Does the thing come with full instructions?

There is a driver CD and instructions on the CD as well. And there is additional information on Moates website.
