Default Cigarette lighter

Can the cigarette lighter in my 87 be swapped out for a modern one that is cabable of fitting cell phone chargers in with no problems ? I happen to have a T-Mobile SK2 and the damn thing cannot fit in all the way because the charger is too big for it.

All lighters are the same size. Swapping won't do you any good. If the problem is the base/back end of the charger is too big to fit into the area above the plug - get an aftermarket plug and mount under the dash on the passenger side right next to the console. That puts it out of the way so you can still use the drink holders.

Are you saying that the lighter-hole is too small a diameter for your charger, or that the space around the lighter is just too cramped for the charger to line-up with the hole?

Buy a DC/DC splitter. the kind that has one small plug that goes into the lighter port and has two wires coming out of it, each with another lighter port. works fine. can even close the door over the lighter area and just feed the two wires out through seam in door. thats what i do

Though that sounds like A good idea.. but isn't there a way to just replace the old one with a newer one say from a 96 Vette ? Or is it different ?

Pretty sure all cigarette lighters are created equal. I bought a new universal unit from a parts store and installed it on the right side of the console underneath the passenger knee pad. You have to pull the radio and heater control box to access the backside. I jumped the wiring into the existing lighter circuit. Nicely hidden yet accessable...

I bought a dual outlet power supply from radio shack. It plugs into the lighter and is hinged in the middle. It even has a green led to tell me if the power is there or not.
