Default LT-1 Head for L-98

Was told could use LT-1 heads on the L-98 with some mods. Asked around was told have to make two plugs for each head. When I got home it looks like I would need to plug opening from top off head were the oil drains, also open path for coolent too go into manifold also plug the two holes on the base of the Head. Is this all our should I start over. Also a good porting job in Fl..

John Lingenfelter mentioned this in his book and said he couldn't find any significant gain from this difficult swap. I would think that with CNC cylinder heads in Pineallis? Fla. there also wouldn't be much reason to consirder the LT-1 heads. JMHO

There's nothing as frustrating as being the trend setter! IMO this mod counteracts the primary benifit of LT1 head (reverse cooing) I'd spend my money on proven mods.

Aren't the GM vortecs technically the LT1 head made to fit earlier gen motors?

If you don't already have the heads this is also an option.

Thanks Shotchkiss for the link. There was some help there. I was thinking with after market heads different length push rods, having head milled to right combustion chamber size. Then again maybe different push rods again, holes for mounting accs.. The LT-1 head ported with valve job cost wise may not be out of line. It looks like they will work, have to drill some new mounting holes for manifold and making a passage for coolent to manifold. Will talk to some porters monday to see if I should go with it.
I ride bimota's so life is never easy.

ZAWA,

Being different is one thing, but putting LT1 heads on an L98 is a total and complete waste of time.

Stick to proven heads that will provide the amount of power you need... and the thought of installing the L98 TPI on those heads is, sadly, a joke. It will buy you nothing but headaches and bragging rights, but your car will be no faster for all the effort.

If you want LT1 heads that bad, by all means, swap an LT1 in there and be done with it.

The TPI intake is a pig... it won't flow past 5000 RPM... just where the LT1 starts to wake up. I just don't feel it's worth the hassle, the cost, or the lack of pure performance. There is a reason these parts are not compatible.

If you want performance, check out Dart or AFR heads and a nice intake, such as the mini-ram or Super-Ram.

BTW, Bimota's are cool. I like Aprilia myself...

I may be missing something, have read posts saying a ported 113 will work as well as Dart AFR etc. I have good power uptill 4800 now with over rev of 5200. All that I want is power till 5200 and a little over rev. More than that and more cans of worms start to open up. I think it will take me 4 hrs to make heads work. Was looking to see if I'am on the right track and if someone had done this. I also enjoy my Aprillia RSVR.

The 113 heads on your vette flow as well as the LT-1 heads. Putting the LT-1 heads on your L-98 will not be worth the effort because you will not pick up any power, or very little additional power. You would be better off buying some aftermarket performance heads that outflow the LT-1 heads, or porting your 113 heads.

Aprilia's are cool.

However, you seem to have missed the point of my post. That being, the heads on the L98 are NOT the restrictive factor - it's that pig of a TPI intake. Loose that and you are golden. New heads won't help one bit.

Allow me to give an example... you hook a 4" fire hose up to your house tap outside.... what is the restriction? Not the hose, but the lines leading up to it. That's what putting LT1 heads on an L98 is gonna do. NOTHING.

Now, if you wanna do something, there is the LT1 INTAKE conversion. That will put an LT1 intake on an L98. That will help a LOT.

As I stated, a super ram or mini ram will get you a ton of breathing.

Also, you can take that 4 hours and hone and port out the TPI. That will free up power. Edelbrock used to have a base and runner option, as does Arizona Speed and Marine. Check TPiS for more options.

I have a 85 with stock cast iron heads. I do have a ported TPIS Big Mouth manifold, 58mm runners also ported , intake is ported, all are gasket matched.
I was looking for aftermarket heads, but saw problems there. Stated looking for 113 heads could not find them, the LT-1 heads became available, and told they would work with mods. I'am not a car guy do not calm to be, thats why there is 38,000 miles on this car in 21 years of ownership. Also would like it to look some what stock under hood. Do not claim this is a great mod, just some thing that would be like the ported 113.

You haven't looked enough... 113s are so common. Just ask in the Parts FS section.

I may have a set from my wifes 87, shortly.

for the $$, I would wait and pick up a set of used AFR heads for the L98's - they do come up from time to time and are a better casting to begin with over any factory GM Alumn. head of the era.

I'm in the middle of researching new heads and uncovered the following info:

from Chevy High Performance flow archieves at 0.400 in lift

http://chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/41598/

stock 113 head 189 in / 157 ex
mild ported 113 212 in / 175 ex
LT1 head 213 in / 155 ex

Here's what I've settled in on for my 5500 rpm road racing heads

Edelbrock Preformer 216 in / 159 ex

It's a direct bolt on, flows slightly better than the LT-1 and has a smaller intake port volume so I should not give-up much torque. I'm also adding the LT1 intake.

If I was drag racing I might go with a bigger head but for road racing I'm thinking I still want some pull out of the low speed corners.
