Default Dana 44

Hello Im installing a dana 44 diff. in my 93 (auto trans) can anyone tell me if I need to change the C-beam and driveshaft, I read somewhere that you have to change them with the ones from a manual transmission is this true? Thanks Mike

C-beam and drive shaft is shorter for the dana 44. You can shorten your auto driveshaft, and install the autos yoke, for the driveshaft, but may need to find a C-beam.

The drive shaft may work as is. Although the Dana 44 shaft is shorter, because of the "C" beam, there is very little movement in the slip yoke and the longer shaft has been known to work for some. The 36 "C" beam can be re-drilled and used with the 44 rear end. Don't forget speedo gears, if necessary, as long as it's apart.

I've heard of others using the auto driveshaft.
But, on my '92 A4, I used a new 6 speed driveshaft with the front yoke from the automatic driveshaft and a new 6 speed C-beam.

hmmm. I wonder just how much shorter. I have a D44 in my auto equiped vette and despite what I've read on here regarding people being able to remove the driveshaft with the C Beam in place, I can't do it. I need to remove the beam and tilt the engine/trans down to remove the driveshaft. :scratcheshead:

My appologies for the threadjack

It's only about a 1/4" difference between the two driveshafts. The auto driveshaft will fit, but the extra length is enough you won't be able to remove the driveshaft without dropping the rear end.

Find a manual driveshaft and swap in the auto yoke.

Thanks

The driveshaft is about a 1/4" or so from being able to come out. I thought I was prying on things way too hard and it went beyond my comfort level so I lowered the tranny.

the d36 c-beam is 1" longer than the d44 c-beam and the hole distance is 1 3/4" at each end. the d44 driveshaft is 26 3/4" from centerline to centerline of the u-joints. i don't have a d36 shaft to compare it to.
