Thanks you just proved my therory....previous owner did a no-no
I cleaned the the TB with carb cleaner a few weeks ago and since then motor has an idle around 1000. The IAC opening in the TB is on the bottom side and guess where all the crude went too as I was spaying the cleaner?
I was pressed for time and didn't pull the IAC until today. When I pulled the IAC there was a partial gasket around the mating surface. It didn't look original but then again the gasket had heat damage so I wasn't sure.
I cleaned the valve real good and it wasn't all the bad, made another gasket and stuck it back in the hole. Still have high idle. Tomorrow I am going to test it and see if the plunger moves if not then I'll install a new one. The kind that has an oring
The haynes manual (which is mostly useless except for some illustrations because it attempts to cover 84-96 in one book) does offer this pic( see "B") so apparently some models have a gasket. Doesn't say which ones or if it acts as a shim or not.
The gasket on mine doesn't even get compressed. It's loose after the iac is tightened. Although i think i'll yank it out and clean it today.
Are you having issues with yours also?
I saw the picture in the book showing a gasket but I have heard there could be a oring also. If the iac is tight and the gasket is loose then I would think the plunger is all the way out and seated in place preventing the valve from being properly tighten or is gasket is too thin?
Does the plunger seal off tight when seated? and just how important is a perfect seal? Reason why I ask is the plunger on mine is showing more wear on one side then the other.
These questions are not that important but it does help with a little working know-how. Now I'll go throw some money at it
If your IAC is functional AND the idle screw (under a cover) is set correctly. check to make sure that the bushings on the throttle plate rod are not worn. I had to have mine rebuilt because the bushings were worn and the throttle plates were not closing completely.
Can you see light through the throttle plates when you hold it up to the light?
brookman. I haven't had if off yet and with 136,000 miles on it I think this might be a possibility.
Another thing that was brought to my attention is a vacum leak. Which makes sense. I have already replaced one vac line that looked like it was going to break apart. I will inspect the others and replace as needed.
With the iac plunger fully extended and if the gasket or oring is too thick, would this prevent the plunger from sealing or does the plunger automatically stop when it seats. On the other hand if the gasket/oring is to thin would the iac motor continue to run even though the iac is seated and possibly wear the motor out?
I like to make mountains out of mole hills. Thanks to all.
