Just did mine and had the same problem. I lightly emery clothed the out side of the ball joints and inside of the a-arms. But what really made the difference was I applied my press pressure to different points on the sides of the ball joint, in an alternating pattern of two or three points as I pressed it in. If I tried to press in the center it just would not go in the a-arm. Be very careful not to press to much on one side or the other just a little bit at a time. This will take along time to do but it will go in.
On my 85 the www.Powerperformancemotorsports.com ball joints went in with no problem on a 100,000 pd press. Obviously you don't have one of those at home but it worked like it should. The kit from them was $220 and came with the poly bushings, the upper and lower ball joints, and I believe end links for the sway bar. That's too bad that you have to machine parts to make them fit. Something isn't right! Good luck!

UPDATE...
got my order in from rockauto.com. These were Moog parts. The Napa ones are not moog.
Moog is .015" oversized... Napa is .025" oversized. The Moog size was enough interference just to where I could barely press them in with my 10 ton press. I'm back on the road again.
