Default Oh yeah new tranny for xmas

Ok, just talked to the old man tonight. He said I would get my tranny rebuilt for x-mas. new TQ and all. Any suggestions to look for when upgrading the 700r4? So far im thinkin cooler, shift kit, torque converter. What parts can be beefed up on this baby? valve body?

You could spend thousands upgrading a 700r4. What power do you plan to make and how hard are you gonna pound it? Good advise can start from here.

Ok, its gonna be a daily driver, right now its only putting out like 220 horses and 280 lbs of torque to the wheels but im not done with it. Im trying to get the rwhp to about 300 and the torque near 400.

I plan to retune chip, port polish heads, larger ratio rocker arms (or maybe just a cam swap) and run about a 125 shot of nitrous to it after all that. Im going to maybe a 3.07-3.45 rear gear ratio. At the rate im going ill be done in like 3 years, I hope.

Its a brand new engine with about 3000 miles on it.
Oh yeah and maybe Ill get on it a few times a weeks and let the power out. I like to enjoy the car.

Have you considered just buying a replacement TCI type from Summit or Jegs?

Cooler is always a great idea. Shift kit is nice too. Inside the trans, high pressure pump spring, 10 vane pump, beast reaction shell, blue 6 disk 3-4 clutch plates(Regular paper for the other 4 clutch packs),and that is about all you need. Key is the builder.

If your car has the origional 86 model year trans, you will want to upgrade to the later model 29 element sprag. You may also want to upgrade the lo roller clutch, piston, and waved cushion and selective to later model type.

The first thing you should get if you don't already have one is an 87 or later 700r4 case.

I would also recommend not getting the tci trans from summit. this is more of a strip 700 r4 than a street 700 r4.

If a shop is going to do the rebuild, have them install a complete trans go performance shift kit, clutch and band kit,

If you want a really good street 700r4 that can take some abuse, go for a rebuilt unit from ART CARR.

My car has 148K miles and I have had three trannys already. The best one so far has been the last one from art car.

Having it rebuilt I would assume be cheaper and maybe just as good. As long as I find a good rebuilder.

Thanks for the advice im gonna jot this stuff down.

The 700r4 has a terrible reputation I feel it does not deserve. My car is proof of that. I pound it hard and it has been fine. They need very little money(in upgrades) to hold up to 450-500 ft lbs. Remember though, more power = shorter clutch pack life. This is a fact that must be dealt with. One cannot expect to make tons of power and have it last 100k miles. Blueprinting is the key.
