Hey folks have'nt had call on the expertise for months, at least since the flywheel came lose and destroyed the tranny. Anyway the 1 frost plug over the down time rusted out, it's the one on the right side of engine above the cross member, how diffcult to replace? what tools required? and How long of a job?
Yes it was from within, the access is the problem the location above the cross member makes it almost impossible to get to do I have raise the engine on that side to access? It's the one above the motor mount on right side, what a dumb place to put it.
There fairly easy to replace-it's just accessing them.Remove whats left of the old one, haven't done one in years-but I think I used permatex on it-just make sure you get it started straight-I used a large socket to tap it in.
As previously stated it is an easy repair that is only difficult due to access constraints. However, did the freeze plug rust from within? If the answer is yes I would flush the cooling system since antifreeze is supposed to provide anticorrosion protection.

And also if it rusted from within (which is pretty much a given) your cooling system is in horrendous condition. As well as a thorough flush, including draining the block, ideally all of the core plugs should be replaced.
If you dig the old one out, you can install the rubber type plug that has a nut in the center. As you tighten the nut, the rubber spreads outward. They come in very handy in tight areas.
