Now, if you have any idea of how we can talk this bloke into swaping me the 3.31:1 from his 84 into my auto 94 with 2.59:1, please pass on your thoughts!!
Ply him with alcohol and women.
Oh, and CFI-EFI, I was trying to be funny with my WC Fields quote. In hope you took it that way. No offense intended.
CREWZIN, what RPM do you sit on at 60 mph? 1,550-1,600 is 2.59, and 1,700-1,800 is 3.07.
Actually, the RPM's are sitting lower than you stated. At 53 it goes into overdrive and drops down to right around 1,300 and to get up to 60 doesn't take a whole lot of throttle, maybe it's sitting at 1,400-1,500.

'Splain to him about all the petrol the 2.59 gears will save him. Tease him with his new, theoretical, top speed capability.

None taken. I wanted to acknowledge that I knew I was wrong, and didn't want it to appear that *I* thought is was rare or next to impossible.

No worries mate, i probably gave you too low a speed, shouldve said 63-65mph, im used to kph here in Australia, 100kph was 1,800 in the 87 i had with 3.07, but 96kph was 1,700.
Checked out my RPM at cruize on the way home from work tonight, a shade under 1,500rpm for about 90kph, 94-96 kph is right on 1,500rpm, and 100kph (about 63mph) was around 1,550-1,600rpm. My 94 has a 2.59:1 rear.
When I got my build sheet for my 87 vert automatic, I was suprised to see that it came with a 2.73 gear.
It has just about every other performance option though.
Was this a common ratio for these cars?
What???? Now there's 3 sets of gears...2.59, 2.73 and 3.07 that could have come with the auto trans?
I still get a kick out of calling the 3:07 high performance axle. But it is. With the 3.06 1st gear ratio of the auto trans, it resembles an old turbo 350 trans with 4:11's. Lately, I have been running the 3:33's. They came in my dana 44. For an all around gear(with my combo) they seem pretty nice.
My C4 has the option codes G44 and G92 but NOT Z51.
Is that possible? What does this mean?
It means that you have the 3.07:1 rear gear ratio, and that for YOUR car, 3.07 IS the performance ratio. G92 ONLY indicates "performance ratio". It doesn't designate any specific ratio. Just as the "standard ratio" varies with the year, transmission and body style, so does the "performance ratio".
My comment of the "G92" (3.31 :1 gears) first requiring the Z51 option was only intended to address 1984, and apparently THAT is wrong.

In some years, the 3.07 was the "G92" for certain cars. For my automatic, 3.07 gears are standard. The "G92" was 3.31.
