Default Gray wire for information center

First of all, have I been clicking on the right thing here to just post a question ?? By that I mean (Post new thread) button. I end up with the blue envelope. Now to my question-----On my 86, 4+3 I replaced my information center. When I took out the old one, I had one loose wire in the harness. (Grey) On the new one, the same grey wire is there with the same plug on the end. I don't think I had any lights behind the switches before, and I don't have any behind the switches now. Info lights work fine. Is the gray wire either + or - for the lights behind the switches?? Thanks----Dave

Grey wire is insturment panel illumination. It provides power to the illumination lights in the heater controls, any illuminated switches, etc on the dash.

It seems like your car does not have elec. climate control...? That grey wire, as stated above, does provide back lighting...to the el. climate control panel..it connects to a blue wire with a grey connector in cars with this option.

So without the gray wire hooked up I will have no lighting behind the 4 switches??? The connected end of the gray wire is on the language switch. I don't know were the power comes from for the 2 bulbs behind the 4 switches?? Also I have a manual heater. The lights behind the insturment panel, work fine. That gray wire is at lest a foot long. Is this wire independent of the main bundle of wires that lead from the IC to the black/blue connector?

Ok...the single grey wire that is not in the bunch, has a grey connector. This is used for cars with ele. climate control only, as it is the Eng/Metric info wire. If you have manual heater controls this wire does not join to anything, so just leave it loose...

If you look at the connector that plugs into the back of the IC the individual pins on the connector are numbered. Number 1 and 9 are both gray and they provide power to the bulbs in the IC to backlight the cluster. Get a testlight and check each of these wires. You should have power at these terminals when you put the parking lights on. If you look at the PDF file that was posted go to page 8A-82-A the bulbs to the far right "telltale assembly illumination lights" have two wires leading to them. Those are wires #1 and #9. They are both Grey.

Does your car have an aftermarket stereo? When did this problem first occur?
