Default help - brake booster question

Hey guys..

I am having some problems with the braking in my car. There is obviously air in the line for every time i brake/ pump the pedal it gets stiffer. I have checked everything over, and cant find any leaks at the calipers. I did find a few drops of brake fluid on the bottom side of the brake booster.

My question here is.. Does fluid actually go into the brake booster? Or is the fluid perhaps the master cylinder leaking off and running down? Can someone please tell me how I can determine which would be the cause of the leak? I dont want to replace a 200 dollar unit, when the bad part is the other 200 unit Any input welcome!

No, brake fluid is not supposed to enter the booster.

Sounds like you have a master cylinder seal leaking, which is allowing the fluid to enter the booster. It's a pretty common problem; been there.

Left un-repaired, it'll ruin the booster too. So you'll end up replacing both the master cylider and the booster.

Repair it as soon as possible is my advice.

How can you tell if the booster is bad?

Mine has a leaky seal on the back of the master also ('85). I have a new one to put in sometime before the car comes out of storage. This weekend I pulled the booster and took it apart with the help of the service manual and checked for problems. Everything looked good so I greased it with silicone grease and reassembled it. Took 4 hands to get it back together, but overall was pretty easy.

There are a couple of ways that I know of. One is the brake pedal will be hard as a rock and second, you can brake, but the car won't stop in the distance it should.

When my booster had a crack in it, I'd brake in the normal manner, but the car wouldn't stop and I'd end up half-way through a red light before it did.

I couldn't find the crack until I removed it from the firewall, then I saw it. It was on the engine side of the booster, beginning in about the 7 o'clock position and continuing up to about 11 o'clock.

Hope this helps.
