Default Vin Decoding?

I was sitting here on the net and came across vin decoding. So I decided to fool around with mine. But I have a couple of questions and maybe one of you can explain it to me.
I have a 84.
According to every vin decoder I came across the 4th digit is the body , y= Y-body but my vin says "A"
The 8th digit represents Engine, 5=LT4 8=L98 and so on.
Now if I have a L83 how can my eighth digit be an 8?
The rest of the vin decoding I understand but I can't figure out what A stands for and why my 8th digit is an 8 and not something else.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, I suppose I have nothing better to do right now.
thanks

The vin codes for 84s go like this. This only shows the camaro options, but the vin decoding is the same for you.

1st digit: Country of origin: 1 = USA, 2 = Canada.
2nd digit: G = General Motors
3rd digit: Division, 1 = Chevrolet.
4th digit: Restraint system:
A = Non-passive, B = Automatic belts, C = Inflatable restraint
5th digit: Series: P = Camaro Sport Coupe, S = Camaro Berlinetta
6th & 7th digit: Body Style: 87 = Sport Coupe
8th digit: Engine : See specific year (camaro info) for breakdown.
9th digit: Check digit - used to verify that the VIN was recorded correctly.
10th digit: Year: B = 1981
11th digit: Letter indicating assembly plant
L = Van Nuys, California, N = Norwood, Ohio
12th through 17th digits: Sequential production number starting with 100001

Here's mine for 85:

1G1YY0783F5115736

1 Country the car was manufactured in 1 = USA
2 Corporation that built the car G = GM
3 Make of the car 1 = Chevrolet
4 Car line or series Y = Y-body series
5 Additional information about the Vette Usually a Y but a Z = ZR1
6 Body style 1 = two door coupe
3 = convertible
7 Restraint system 3 = late model seat belts warning and air bags
8 Engine type 8 = L98, P = LT1, J = ZR1, 5 = LT4
9 Randomly generated check digit 0 - 9
10 Model year GM decided to give the car B = 1981, C = 1982, D = 1983, E = 1984, F = 1985, G = 1986
H = 1987, J = 1988, K = 1989, L = 1990, M = 1991, N = 1992
P = 1993, R = 1994, S = 1995, T = 1996, V = 1997, W = 1998
11 Assembly plant or location 5 = Bowling Green
12 to 17 Production sequence number Example: 800001 = ZR1

8 = L48, 8 = L83 & 8 = L98

Does that clear it up for you?

That helps clear it up. What was screwing me up is that whenever I did a search it would say 1981- present and then give the description like you have for your 85. And when looking at the description you have everytime I would see that 4th and 8th digit and it just didn't make sense to me.
Thanks for taking the time to explain it.
Once again sorry for not posting in the general forum.

The digits in the VIN are based on sequence.

Three different engines in question, use the same digit for their VIN code. But it's based on model year and manufacurer.

The same #8 could be a base 4cy for Toyota, an optional V-8 for Ford, ect...

Think of it as a pyramid, branching out in many different possibilities. The first three digits are key for the rest.
