Default 1990 question on maganflow cat system

Triple black 90 with 49 on the ticket and L98

I replaced the stock air filter with a a K&N filter and air box, Air Foil in the throtal body and a Magnaflow cat back exhaust. I saw a big differance with these modifications. The sound is ok but !!! could sure a little more in the sound department. I thought about removing the stock cat and replacing it with a Magnaflow cat system.
1. How much louder would it be?
2. What would I be gaining in the performance?
3. Or this is a waist of time and money
4. How about a chip???

e-mail bgredsox1@sbcglobal.net

thanks Bill

TPIS headers and Highflow Cat made my car sound alot louder, but then I also went with stainless B0rlas. Love the throaty sound. The airfoil does nothing, sorrry to tell you. Get rid of the frisbee on the water pump, is something alot of us do also. If you 1990 was like mine, it had precats and a cat. That frees up the exhaust for flow and sound alot. A chip will help a little, but do not buy a premade one as all they really do is turn on your cooling fans earlier. good luck. Chris

Bill, I'm L98-based, and have the same catback as you. I also have a single, magnaflow main cat. However, no pre-cats as I have LT headers. The sound is kick-azz, as far as 355cid goes. Gutty, racey, sounds almost like a ZR1 at WOT.

Performance maybe 3-5chp gain with an added hi-flow main cat in your case.

As for the necessity of a chip regarding your mods, since yours is MAP-based as is mine, I would strongly suggest contacting Alvin Anderson at www.pcmforless.com, our CF supporting tuner. I can tell you from personal experience, as well as many others here on this board that he's outstanding. He will guide you the right way, and he is not out to make a quick buck. I suspect a chip might be warranted in your case, but I defer to his expertise and judgement. He knows exactly what he's doing.

thanks for the info your right there is two set of cats. I thought the air foil might help but I did not spent a lot of money on it. What is the frisbee deal I'm not sure what you are talking about on this subject??

Thank you for the information. It sounds like I will be giving Alvin a call. I do not plan to go nuts on my ride at least I am saying this. I went nuts on my second corvette and I got way carried away. I 'm trying to hold back and not tear the car up. The car is really mint and I just want it to run a little better but sound great when you drive by.

Bill, sounds great. I would love a triple black '90, I've never seen one. Sounds like you have a great car.

Might want to consider, instead of LT headers, at least a front Y-pipe mandrel-bends and eliminate the front 2 (pre)cats, just for a little extra exhaust scavenging effect, that is if your emissions inspection won't have any heartburn with that (ie, changing the visual from total of 3 cats to 1). Again, talk to Alvin about the value of this setup. Others on the board have done it, I never did, as I went straight to Hooker headers & catback as my 1rst mod. With the front Y-ipe exhaust mod, this with the other mods might warrant a customized chip a bit more, again, especially since you are MAP-based management. You'll definitely get the sound you're looking for at any rate with a bit of sotp kick

If you want more sound and don't have emmisions testing, toss the cat and you'll be happy.

The wonderful state of Ct. would go ape SHHHHH and I really don't need the pain. My first thought was to can the cat but !! I guess I'am getting older and don't want the pain in the rear. As far as the sound I would be happy running open side pipes. I had them on my second car but really don't want to mess with this one to much. The car is really clean and un molested the people who owned it before me were older in there 60's and one was a female hard to beleave the condition of the ride. I bought it last July all stock with all the papers from day one of any service being done. I am the fourth person to have the car. The third was a bone head who stold the car from the old lady. If you want give me your e-mail and I will send you a few pictures. I would attach them but this is my first attemp to write in and I am a green horn to this. I won first and a second at car shows last year. Spent many nights cleaning the frame and under the hood to make it o-my god. To much time on my hands?? or just car crazy I'm not sure.
