My primary cooling fan is not turning on at all in my '85. I know it works because when I ground the ALCL terminals with the ignition on, it turns on. But, the only fan that is turning on with the car running is the aux fan at 239F. I dont think the problem is in the Fan Relay because then the fan wouldn't work at all, right?
Correct. If it were the fusible link or relay it wouldn't work with the ALDL test. This pretty much narrows it down to the temp switch. On my 90 it is activated by the ECM when the the CTS tells it the temps are up enough.
I'm not positive on an 85 but I dont think the ECM is in the mix. I think its just controlled by a temp switch mounted inbetween the #1 and #3 cylinder. I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm wrong.
Oh yeah, it should also work when you turn the AC on by way of the AC high pressure switch if it's just the temp switch.

well, the fan is working now (i have no idea why). But, there is something else that has been bothering me. On the passengers side of the radiator, there is a hole that coolant is coming out of. It is the third hole down from the radiator cap under the overflow hose and the trans cooling line. What is this hole for and should coolant be coming out of it?

Again, I'm not an 85 guy so I'm going to leave it to them but I do know there is not supposed to be coolant leaking anywhere.
I just learned alot. But I'm still not at all positive which info was correct.
The bottom line is that an '85 WITH an auxiliary fan works the same as all the 1986 to 1989s. What is unique about the 1985, is that when there is no auxiliary fan, there is STILL a fan switch in the right head that works as sort if a "fail safe". That switch supplements the ECM activation of the main fan. In 1985 through 1989 with the auxiliary fan, the ECM, alone controls the main fan. The ECM gets it's engine temp info from the ECT sensor in the front of the intake manifold. It uses this sensor for all of it's temperature related functions, such as idle speed, etc.
