I'm thinking about replacing the original 4+3 with a 5 speed Tremec transmission. If I do any suggestions from anyone on a good clutch? Or transmission for that matter? I figure I might as well do the whole thing! Thanks...
My buddy had one in his 92 firebird. It would bind up every time he laid into it. I do not know if his was the exception, or the rule but it was the biggest turd of a gear box I have ever seen.
I cannot speak from experience. The tremec may be a good gear box. His was so bad I thought it was defective. I offered to open it up and have a look, but he did not want to. He did the unholy thing and converted it to a 700r4. Because he was able to hit all 3 gears, he picked up et in the 1/4 mile and is happy now. Many guys here have done different types of stick shift swaps. You should get some good info.
Man, thats really strange - about the tremek being bad - I mean. Theres a whole bunch of people here in the forum who have replaced the 4+3 with a tremek - usually the perfect fit kit from Keisler - and have had 0 problems. The most common comment is : best mod I ever did. Mine went in in a day - shifts great. I road race it on a regular basis - so I try my best to abuse it!
I would suspect your freind either had a bad box to begin with - or botched the install. The clutch I paired mine with came from Carolina Clutch - very knowlegeable guys - and good service and price!
I also have the keisler tremec and can only say great things about it!! best 4+3 replacement I could have done. As for a clutch upgrade, I got a stage 2 clutch (probably another step up from a stock clutch) to go with the 383 and other performance. good luck, I've heard MANY times that the keisler was a better upgrade than the richmond.

I swaped to a zf6..even though a blue fells sturdy. I also have tremec in the GTO...doesn't feel as positive...and after 30K miles will kick it self of out gear.
The thing about the ZF is that you get a truly bolt in solution. What turned me away from the tremec (other than more pricer than the zf6 conversion) was that they use some goofy type of adapter for the c-channel. The richmond seems to be more of a race tranny. I am unsure of their C4 mounting solution, but you pay DEARLY for "A" overdrive (6 speed) and it needs an external shifter setup.

I agree. We went through the whole process of centering the bellhousing in relation to the centerline of the crank. We had it in and out about 5 times. Checked every part of the driveline 3x. His was a turd. The trans must be decent at least. If every unit was like my friends, they could not survive.

not alot...but there are alot of guys with the tremec tranny that should chime in..do a "keisler" search and you'll find more than enough opinions on this tranny
Anyone who wants more info on the 4+3 to 5 speed conversion, just give me call!
In addition to having a much better tranny, you'll also have a lot less junk (wiring, switches, cooling lines, etc...) and therefore less weight and complexity.
