Anyone installed one of these on their C4. Mines a 96 LT4 and I hear conflicting stories on the install. Some say you have no chance getting the pin out that holds the shifter on without droping the exhaust and maybe the trans. Some say that if you loose or break anything you are toast? Some say neither has to be done. Anyone give me some details on the real install. I've already looked at Hurst PDF install instructions which are a waste. Thanx......G
The installation is a PITA. I would say get the car as high as you can, drop the exhaust to gain additional working room and have fun with removing and installing the pin. I am lucky, I changed mine with the trans out of the car.
Well I did mine w/o the exhaust in the way and it was still a pain. If you can get the car on a lift then you can probably get away w/o removing the exhaust.
I have a 94 and I didn't think it was hard with the exhaust at all. I spent maybe 15 min under the car total. If you have a long punch that drops below the exhaust so you can hold onto it there isn't much in the way. I'm wondering if maybe my exhaust wasn't quite centered which may have helped. I know my clutch was changed before I got the car which also may have helped the pin to come out. All I did was unplug the VSS sensor and push the pin clip out of the way with two screwdrivers and drive the pin up.
My hands and forearms are too big, so I had to remove the exhaust. If you have an aftermarket exhaust, then it's not that bad. I only had to remove the inlet pipe(s) to the resonator.....not the entire exhaust.
I did it on jack stands and dindn't drop the exhaust or tranny. It was very easy except getting the rubber boot back onto the back of the tranny, still haven't gotten back under it to get it on all the way. The only problem with the install was the big pin was a little too short to get the clips on. I ground a little of the housing to give it a little extra room. It was deffinitely worth the effort. Not having the reverse lock out is great!!
We did four in one day at Rex Ruby's house and we removed the exhaust on all four cars. Main reason was if we would have had to do it, it was already done, so it saves time to just remove it, it isn't that hard unless it's the first time you're removing the exhaust.
