Is your service engine light on?
you can buy a scanner for about 25 bucks at your local autoshop or just use a paperclick to get your codes. Not sure the trick with the clip but a lot of guys here use it. I bought the scanner only because it came with a book too, to help me understand what the codes meant.
The paper clip is really simple-you have ALDL connector above your right knee when you're in the drivers seat-may or may not still have the slip on cap.Simply put-you just use a paper clip shape like a U, or a jumper wire. When you look at the ALDL, the top right side you'll see pins-don't mess with the others and DON'T start the engine, just turn the key on-with the clip in place and key on your check engine light will start to blink-you should get a code 12,which is good, the light will blink once, pause then blink twice, that is code 12.

if you don't have a FSM.
AGAIN, it's the top two pins on the top row, right side you jump. And don't start the car-remember to remove the clip when you're done reading the codes. Once you do it you'll see how simple it is.
