Ok well lets see here I checked all the parts 2 times with good ones and the old ones, so with that said here goes............I replaced the ECM about 2 years ago , BUT like you say i could have had these problems and may need to change that again not sure.but everything else has been changed. I have checked every stich of wire i could find and i can't find anything obivious at least to me and i know that is not saying much but anyways. I changed the o2 sensor also......I will read the old helms book.and guess it will be time to think about maybe sorta could be the ECM???????
everything has a map sensor EXCEPT 85-89 tpi's, they have maf only.
hate to send you into this one, but a couple months ago i ran into 3 different cars (1 vette) that had a corroded connector pin INSIDE the ecm connector...just one pin on each, almost completely gone in contact area but visual good until you actually release the pin and pull it out of the plastic...never saw a bad before this year, none lately...dealer has new individual pin connectors by the hundreds (why) if you need one-cut/crimp/solder...pull the pass seat out, lay on your back, get comfy, this is a slow job
btw-this ain't in the helms book either, guess it wasn't a problem when they wrote the book
Ok well I finially got rid of my service engine soon light.you will never guess what i found out the vacum line going to the EGR solonied valve was off I put it back on and drove it all weekend and no more problems.........I just cant believe it..........But I have to admit the Helms book is what really helped me.............and a big thank you to all the people who told me about it here.
When I first posted about mine being the EGR switch-someone posted that 88s don't have the switch- I believe. Well I'm looking at the new Ecklers catalog-page 109 and see the switch-refered to as the EGR valve temperature switch 1985-1989, $11., I know that fixed my problem when I had the intermittent EGR code. But I see by your original post it looks like you replaced it-refering to it as the thermal switch.
thats a true statement because I went back and looked what i found out was the temp switch is the temp sensor in the EGR pipe. I replace that and the pipe.........along with that the EGR valve.I coulnd not find the damn EGR vacum solinoid .well I found that and thats were my problem was after changing the EGR valve I must have left off the vacumn line to it, any ways it fixed my problem,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Congrats, and never underestimate the value of the FSM with it's trouble shooting charts. Had you started with it, you could have saved buying that temp sensor.
Congrats!! Also you may if you have not already done so change your vacum lines. They tend to become very brittle and break as mine have and needless to say has caused a check engine light. Wish I had seen this thread earlier and been of more help. Good luck in the future.
