The Dana gears can be gotten from a Dodge dealer, but you will need the install kit to complete the job. (Shims, bearings etc.) I got mine from DTS (Drivetrain Specialists) in the Detroit area. Good service and advice. Prices fair to good.
I got this info a few months ago. Give this guy a call.
I purchased our Dana Super 44 4.10 gears from Al Kinder for $180.00.
Phone: 1-800-482-3331
Email: usazr1@aol.com
I got mine through Al too. He is quite professional.
I put the gears in a couple weeks ago and they are great.
I have more shifting to do, but the engine always feels like it's on the peak of the power curve with no valleys.
I'm eager to take the car back to the track to see how it does with the 4.10 gears installed.
I paid Al $285 for my 4.10's to be installed soon. He told me he never sold any of these gears at $180, but I have seen this $180 a couple of times on the forum. What gives??????? Did I get hosed????

Re: Viper Gears (GM_96LT4)
I know this is a basic question but, aside from the Super 44 gearset what is needed to replace my current 3.33 ring and pinion with a 3.55 Super 44 gearset?
What shims and bearings does one use, the normal Corvette rear parts or is something different required?
I am about to do the 4.10 swap as well, and have questions on the speedo gears and shims. On 1995 and newer cars, you are able to do something to the computer in order for it to know you have the new gears, correct? WIth 1994 and older, you have to use the speedo gears or the computer module to fool the computer correct? I have a 1992, so would it be easier to do the compute rmodule or the speedo gear? What would be more reliable? WHat are the shims used for? Last thing, since the pumpkin is opened up, should anything else be replaced for general mainatance and good running conditions? Thanks, and sorry for the many questions. :blueangel:
On my '94 I used a Hypertech programmer to setup the speedometer correctly. It only took a few minutes. I don't know about the '92.
I replaced the bearings as well, then ran 500 miles gently and changed the gear oil with Red Line synthetic and limited slip additive.
Apparently, some installations are a tight fit and need to clearance work to fit everything properly, but mine apparently went in without a hitch (the mechanic told me).

Does anyone know what you need to do on a '92 to calibrate the speedo to new gears?

Re: Viper Gears (Trizney)
Your understanding of the methods for adjusting the speedometer to be compatible with new gears seems correct to me. I don't know if reliability would be that much of an issue with either method in my opinion.
I read in the TPIS insider hints book that if you go beyond a 3.75 rear ratio speedo gears are not available that will ensure your speedo is totally accurate (it will be out by a given percentage). Maybe someone who has done the swap (I haven't) can clarify this.
In case anyone else reading this is wondering, I wrote to Al about availability of 3.55 or 3.75 gears and he advised that he only provides the 4.10 gearset, not other ratios. Price for the 4 series gearset was $285.
My understanding is that the shims are used to setup the gears to ensure that they are located accurately within the housing. I could be wrong on that one.
As far as what else to replace, not sure of a specific parts list myself but I would replace all the bearings, seals and shims in the diff housing. Check your halfshaft & driveshaft u-joints as well while you are at it...
What does it cost to install gears in a Vette. I remember I paid $225 to install 3.73s in my Cobra.......seems like a rule of "three" for the Vette. Everything costs three times as much as my Cobra!

I heard that it should take over 4 hours to install, so about $250 I would assume.
