Default Engine temp 235 degree solved finally

I used to always see my temperature go to around 235 degrees.... tried using the aux fan with a switch, tried cleaning the radiator out, all to no fix.
Finally put the hyper chip in with the main temp fan turn on at 160 and put a 180 thermostat in the car.
WoW.... car never gets above 190 or so..... glad i got the chip.
Maybe it will help others.

And the fan never shuts off. I HATE the sound of the fan. Time to stock up on fan motors.

RACE ON!!!

You installed a new thermostat for nothing because your 180 stat is wide open all the time after the coolant passes 180. Driving above 35 mph should allow enough airflow through the radiator to maintain the design operating temp (I'll guess 195 F). Check the condition of your air dam, it sounds like yours is torn or missing.

there is something else wrong with that car... I think this "fix" is only going to mask it.

unless the old stat was bad, of course...

Running 235 was not caused by your thermostat rating or your main fan. Overriding the auxiliary fan will help mask the problem.

You probably fixed the problem when you burped the system to remove air.

Considering the actual flow path of air, I believe replacing the A/C condenser will provide the best cooling results. I have no overheating issues but my 100K+ condenser is next up for replacement.

Did you get your numbers mixed up? You have your fans coming on before your t-stat opens? Sure you don't mean 160* t-stat and fan on at 180*? That would make a lot more sense.

this sounds better to me. in your post, you had the fan fighting with the thermostat; plus in cold weather, especially if you have an oil cooler, your oil is not going to come up anywhere near to ideal temp--and you won't get proper protection.

i'm putting in an aftermarket fan controller and radiator sensor, and i'm planning on setting it to come on at 190-195. i'll adjust that setting if needed as the ambient temps rise. the real problem is, with a rad fed oil cooler, it is hard to get the oil temps above the rad temps unless you've got you're foot in it--then it's good to go.

ideal power temps: oil 210, coolant 180. a 195 fan setting splits the difference.

it's hard to get them both ideal at the same time. a temp cycling oil cooler would be a very good thing. i wish they put stuff like that in the vette instead of six way seats with air bags and automatic climate control, etc..

.

Interesting info. When I had my program burned for my hotcam they set it for fans on @ 175. The oil stays around 200 now. Am I promoting engine wear with the oil that temp? I'm sure when summer hits the oil should be closer to 210-230ish

Actually my oil temp stays within 10 degrees of the coolant temp... Usually above it by 10 if I have airflow through the radiator.

Sitting idling, Coolant will be regulated by the fan at 228, and the oil gets up to 220.

With a 180 tstat (L98) and override of both fans, I can hold the coolant at 185 on a hot day (in San Diego) at idle, and the oil cooler pulls the oil down to 200 during this.

"Finally put the hyper chip in with the main temp fan turn on at 160 and put a 180 thermostat in the car. " wild

You did two things without isolating one first, therefore, it's hard to tell which one or both contributed to the solution. But I'd agree with the others, you still have a problem, but it's being masked.

You didn't mention if you'd ever replaced the thermostat before. Is it possible that the bad thermostat was the cause of your high temps? Could be.

Did you test the old thermo to see if it was or wasn't working?

as said, check your front, under air scoop. it's a bottom breather, and if there's nothing to scoop up the air, then you ain't gonna get any.

Since you are running the fans around 160deg F, install a 160deg T-stat so the main fan won't run all the time.

for the fans and 180* t-stat to work better together, you should have the main fan initialize 190-195*. having it on at 160* is way too early.

and this is why:

Any unnecessary running of the fan(s) puts undue wear and tear on the fan motors, not to mention the alternator and relay(s). At speed, like over 35 mph, the fan may actually interfere and flow the air flow from the ram effect of the speed. Other than that, constantly running the fan(s) is a SWELL idea. The auxiliary fan was an option on the 1985. I an afraid you will be forced to LOOK.

That won't stop the fan from running all the time. If the fans come on at 160°, they won't shut off until the coolant reaches some unknown, lower, temperature (150° perhaps?). The 160° thermostat won't permit the engine to run significantly cooler than it's 160° opening point. You guys fooling with your engine's running temps, be sure of what you are trying to accomplish, and why. THIMK!

RACE ON!!!

Default Engine temp is great now

I have a full body kit on the car and in the front there is not alot of air coming up to the radiator, the car has ac so there is even more blocking the radiator.
I had pulled out the radiator and replaced it, cleaning the area around it....same thing temps around 235 or so.
I put a 180 degree thermostat, temps still remained high.
I put a relay and switch on the secondary fan and used it ....really didn't make the temps change all that much..
Put the hyperchip in.... We have a winner. It made my fan come on at 175. The car never gets above 195.... not even in traffic.
So for me, this was a terrific fix, perhaps the chip set the timing different bringing down the temps or the fan on ealier....whatever it was this worked great for me. And if i have to buy a fan once every couple years...its better than buying a motor every couple years.
