When it comes time for the engine rebuild (383cid), I'm sure that the stock computer will be wayyyy off calibration for the new engine. How have you guys gotten arround this? I've heard talk of custom burnt chips and programable computers but where can I get this equiptment and how much $$?? What do all the rest of you 383 guys do? I'm reading John Lingenfelter's book on how to build a SBC and this seems like the only snafu (it may be covered in a later chapter but if it does I'm still in the part about cranks :D)
I'm going through the chip burning phase of my project and it's nerve racking. First chip was to lean at idle and fat past 3800. Second chip was way to lean at idle but haul foot. Now I'm waiting on the third chip.
I would go ahead and buy the software and use your laptop from work to get accurate sensor readings. You can then start the tune process. I would also dyno it as soon as possible to get a baseline to start from.
Budman
Go to thirdgen.org Then look for the diy-prom section. Thats where I started-read the "101" article by traxion-great info. Then bought the stuff and started tuning! Also a scan tool is a must! I'm personally using diacom on a laptop to scan, but there is freeware out there too. Of course I did this after almost paying the first "custom chip tuner" $650.00 for a dyno tuned chip. :bs :bs Ran like crap!!! He didn't know crap!!!!! And after another try with a custom chip tuner-this one tried but over the phone tuning just doesn't work!!!! Have fun! It is fun to get it running right!
No greasy fingerprints on my books now :p: Good readin' aren't they?
Yes indeed! I've only gotten into the John Lihnfwioryewohnlkdfsjklhewr book so far... how on earth is that man's name pronounced anyhow?
So far I'm still reading about the glories of the 400 crank
