Yesterday I went out to get in my 90 to go to work and it was completely dead. I put the battery charger on it and took another car to work. I came home around 10:00 at night and when I walked up to my car I noticed the left rear lights were glowing very dim. I looked inside and the interior lights were doing the same thing. I just installed the DRL kit from Webelectric the day before. Everything looked good on the install. I didn't know how doing the DRL would affect the interior lights but I opened the hood and took the entire unit out again. Still glowing lights. When I opened the door the interior light would come on brightly like it should and the tail lights went out. Close the door and after the interior light timed out everything started glowing again. I got in and started the car up and after turning it off everything worked like it was supposed to. Interior light turned off and no glowing lights. As I was getting everything ready to put the DRL kit back in I looked inside the car and noticed the lights were glowing. I don't think what I did had anything to do with my problem but I am not sure. If I start the car and then turn it off the lights will stay off for a while and gradually start glowing again. Could this be a bad light control for the interior? Where is this thing located at? We had a rain storm the night I put in the DRL and there was a lot of water under the hood for some reason. Is there anything out in the hood area that could have gotten wet and just needs to dry out? I am thinking about pulling the interior light fuse until I get this one figured out.
Here's more info. I just got done checking the CCM for codes. There weren't any. I took the car for a drive and I noticed that now when I step on the brakes the interior lights go out but come back on as soon as I take my foot off the brake. I have removed the fuse from the interior lights so that maybe the battery won't keep dying. I will check tonight when it gets dark to see if the brake lights are glowing or not.
The heater only works when I have my foot on the brake. Left turn signal causes the heater to turn on and off with it. Haven't checked the fuses yet. When I step on the brake it causes the dashboard to flicker once. Is there possible a ground wire that might have come loose? I don't have a real good wiring schematic.
Which left rear lamps were glowing? The parking lamp or the stop lamp?
One of these circuits needs to be looked at to find out why +12v is getting to that lamp. A rapid flashing turn signal is due to a shorted wire to a turn signal lamp. The flasher works on current, more current, faster flashing rate. You can tell its the front turn signal lamp or the rear that is shorted by observing which lamp is out or very dim while flashing. The dim lamp is the socket that is shorted. The only way a poor ground connection can cause the interior lights to go out when you brake is when the brake light ground is shared with the interior lights (and that ground is not a low resistance ground) and I am certain that isn't the case with your 90 vette. The only thing I can think of that can cause that problem with the interior lights going out when braking, is a poor electrical connection from +12 volts to the ignition switch. The larger stop light current drops the voltage on the load end of the poor connection causing the interior lights to dim. Your interior lights staying on and dim could be a defective courtesy light delay timer. On my 87 the timer is on the RH side of the instrument panel near the multi use center. Last, I recommend you check the wiring connections done to install the DRL (What in hell is a DRL?) as this may be the cause of some of your problems. I further recommend you buy the GM electrical diagnosis service manual supplement as it shows all the electrical circuits, wire colors, parts location, diagnosis procedure, and an explanation of how each circuit works. However, it doesn't explain what to look for in your case.
Everything is working tonight like it should. Didn't do a thing to get them to work properly. I think it might have been water from a recent rainstorm we had.
