Hello, I am trying to get opinions on a problem.
Lately when I going down the interstate in overdrive and give it a little gas the whole car would shave and vibrate until I would give it more gas to go out of 4th to 3rd.
Today there was noise, a loud metallic clunk clunk, then it stopped. Tonight it got worse. I Jacked the car up while it was running and crawled underneath and it sounds like a bunch of bolts bouncing around the converter. Once you put it in gear and give it gas, the noise stops.
Could this be a bad torque converter on something worse right inside the pump? I am thinking about replacing the torque converter and see what happens.
Yes! it's the Torque Converter or it should be I had the same problem in my car once and one of the internals were broken and causing a racket! and if I gave it more it would quiet down then at a stop it almost sounded as if it were knocking. Turned out to be the TQ CNVTR.Take it to a tranny shop(a reputible one!) and have them double check your findings and make sure you do a complete flush of the system. Then make sure you get at least a 2200 Stall Converter you will not regret it. This is what is on mine and WOW! what a huge difference it made! SWEET!(I purchased a "proven" Tq CNVTR from Pete K a forum member)

Thanks,Matt
Proven is my favorite term for used . Matt is right though. It could be the converter. Hopefully the failure did not scatter debris through the entire trans. I would recommend changing the converter, removal and disassembly of the pump, allowing for inspection. Also a close look in the pan is a good idea. Another possibility is a flexplate that has cracked. Pull the cover and shine a flashlight up there. A broken flexplate can sting like a hollowpoint if it breaks in the rpm.
