Default 94 sporadic starting

When I start it I get a click, then nothing. Sometimes, I get no click at all.

After about 3 or 4 tries, it would start right up.

Then, sometimes, either sitting for a day or two, or just after I've driven it, it would start up. Or got through the process above.

I cleaned the pellet on the key. The Opti, wires and plugs were just changed. Any suggestions?

Hmm.... sound's like a classic Chevy hot / weak starter solenoid problem, but need more info to diagnois correctly. How's the battery, voltage, age, etc..., Charging system health, battery cable & ground strap connections, condition, etc....? My beater 1993 Camaro does it sometimes too, cold, hot, doesn't seem to always make a difference, but it is predominitly a hot thing, just not always.

Inspect and clean the connections at the battery. Check the battery voltage at rest and while cranking, and make sure it's where it should be. Take it from there.

Be well,

Yah, but have you checked the connections since it was at Tony's for all the work?

Take a look at this. My experience with the key lock cylinder and the VATS system.

For me, the key lock cylinder was not reading the VATS code the same way every time. Therefore, sometimes it would start and sometimes it would just go "click."

Can be an expensive fix. Some just disable the VATS system. There are many threads on that issue.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the info. I started it up yesterday, and it was hard to start it. While it was running it turned off by itself. No lights, no sound, nothing. Just like someone took the battery out of the car.

Anyway, I'll work on checking the VATS this week.

BTW, how much did it cost you to fix your VATS?

VATS will prevent the engine from turning over and disable the start system. If it clicks it's not VATS. Sounds like a starter.

If it is running, VATS will not kill the engine or make it run bad. That would be another problem.

Check the electrical and the starter first before you go off on a tangent.

Default Update

UPDATE::

I checked the battery connections. They were ok.

I unplugged the ECM and took it out. Inspected the connections. Vacation came and just left it out.

I was thinking about sending it in to get refurb. For ****s and grins I plugged it back in, reconnected the battery and she fired right up. Took it for a drive and all was well.

Got back home, turned it off and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Turned it back on and back to the same thing. Click, nothing. Click, nothing. Then it would start. Moved it back in the garage and went to bed.

No codes.

Is it possible the ECM is going?

I highly doubt it. I think you're barking up the wrong tree.

I think it's time for some meticulous troubleshooting with a DVM and somebody who knows how to use it well (perhaps yourself?).

Be well,

It was the starter.

Ok, I feel better. At least THAT wasn't replaced yet.
