Hmm.... sound's like a classic Chevy hot / weak starter solenoid problem, but need more info to diagnois correctly. How's the battery, voltage, age, etc..., Charging system health, battery cable & ground strap connections, condition, etc....? My beater 1993 Camaro does it sometimes too, cold, hot, doesn't seem to always make a difference, but it is predominitly a hot thing, just not always.
Inspect and clean the connections at the battery. Check the battery voltage at rest and while cranking, and make sure it's where it should be. Take it from there.
Take a look at this. My experience with the key lock cylinder and the VATS system.
For me, the key lock cylinder was not reading the VATS code the same way every time. Therefore, sometimes it would start and sometimes it would just go "click."
Can be an expensive fix. Some just disable the VATS system. There are many threads on that issue.

Thanks for the info. I started it up yesterday, and it was hard to start it. While it was running it turned off by itself. No lights, no sound, nothing. Just like someone took the battery out of the car.
I unplugged the ECM and took it out. Inspected the connections. Vacation came and just left it out.
I was thinking about sending it in to get refurb. For ****s and grins I plugged it back in, reconnected the battery and she fired right up. Took it for a drive and all was well.
Got back home, turned it off and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Turned it back on and back to the same thing. Click, nothing. Click, nothing. Then it would start. Moved it back in the garage and went to bed.
