Hello - I've been messing about with a code 32 and decided to clean up the MAF and throttle body first to see if it improved anything. I had pulled the ECM fuse first to clear codes and now I get code 32 and code 33. What does the 33 mean I should do next?
Thanks everyone
Hello all,
Firstly thank you Agent 86 for the diagram as it allowed me to diagnose the code and correctly replace the EGR temp/diag sensor.
I no longer have any codes however I continue to have a ping problem. I have cleaned the throttle body, MAF and replaced gaskets on the TB and EGR valve as they were in bad shape. I figured perhaps outside air was getting in past the gaskets. The valve looks newer and compresses very well so I didn't replace it. I use premium fuel (91 octane) and have tried many different brands to no avail. My reading on the forums etc seems to indicate a lack of EGR gas causing the pinging. The engine was rebuilt prior to me buying the car with less than 10k miles on it and other than the ping runs very well.
Could the valve be bad or should I be addressing another area? Engine timing is at 6* with wire disconnected. I know this car should pull better than it does when its warm before the knock sensor does its work pulling back timing. Before she's at operating temperature its much stronger (obviously).
Thanks everyone
check the plastic vacuum tubing under the plenum. sounds like you aren't getting control vacuum due to those brittle plastic tubes either to or from the EGR control valve.
also make sure the egr control valve is plugged in
My vacuum lines are in very good condition actually - I thinking they may have been replaced. EGR is plugged in.
I'm pretty sure the 86 diagrams are the same for the 89.
On another note I've tried 94 octane and it improved a lot. However I would still like to have it run without ping on the 91 as it was designed to do, then do a timing advance to 8* like many others have had success with.
I think I found my problem after looking at Eckler's picture of the EGR valve Temp Sensor - I unscrewed the wire from the hex fitting (it came out by hand, no tools) - but it looks as though I should have unscrewed the fitting from the pipe. fortunately it's only a 15 part at the dealer....
