Big question is I have a 1989 that keeps faulting code 44
I understand this code and i'm working on it,Already changed the o2 sensor,the MAF,and the power and burnout relays.
The car goes much longer now until the fault comes on again.
And today before it faulted got it to pass emmissions.
While driving it this morning with the headlights on, I noticed that the battery light was flickering,but my gage said 13.6volts. When I came to a red light,I noticed the battery light went away volt reading 13.8
Got on the highway and the light came on again. Now the weird thing, I put on the A/C and the light went out.turned A/C off and it came back on. This happened each time I tried it!
I think when the car codes 44 is when the volts drop down past 11.0 I've seen the volts flux now and then
Had the alt. checked on a bench and get 14.v and in the car it runs about 13.8v /Brand new battery
You may have a voltage regulator in the alternator that is oscillating causing the battery light to flicker. You need to look at the alternator output waveform with an oscilloscope to see this and parts house alternator testors don't test for oscillating regulators. Heavier loads, like your a/c can cause the oscillating to stop. You can use a voltmeter and measure the ac voltage on the output of the alternator which will measure the amplitude of the ac component and use a 1 mfd capacitor in series with one voltmeter probe to eliminate the alternator dc component from getting to the meter and cause an error. Normally, the ac component is very small, there is some ripple on the alternator output, but is very low peak to peak, like under 0.5 volts ac.
