The minimum recommended piston to head clearance is .035". The minimum piston to valve clearance should be .090" to .100". Once you know YOUR dimensions, you will know what works.

On a stock 85 block with stock pistons can I get away with a .028 thick gasket compressed? How can I check without a lot of work? Will I have to Clay the pistons?Anyone with a setup close to mine?

I would say YES, a stock 85 block, I believe, is .025" in the hole from the factory, at least mine was.

So you would have .053", but I, personally, would re-torque the heads after your first heat cycle.

You can check your deck height with feeler gauges. Clay is one good method to check for piston to valve clearance. I doubt that gasket will cause any piston to valve clearance problems, but if you check, you'll know.
