I don't have a high degree of confidence in the Haynes manual, I would try to get the specs from a forum member with a FSM. You had the lifters positioned on the cam base circle when you made the adjustment, correct?
The car ran just fine before I took it apart, I didnt turn anything while working on it either. Just took the rocker arms off.
I turned them a 1/2 turn after getting zero lash and tried starting it up again. No tapping, but its loping and rpms have dropped back to 400-500 range. I'm really starting to hate my engine.

Sure you did when you tried to start it after incorrectly tightening the rocker arms.
You are missing a critical step in the adjustment procedure. My suggestion is to stop before you do anything else and understand the correct process. Valves must be in the closed position (lifter on cam base circle) before you can make the adjustment. Once zero lash has been achieved tighten another 1/2 to 1 turn.
