Default 89 Climate Control Problem

The controls work good when you first start using it.
You can set the ac or heat to any setting with any fan speed.
The problems exsists that after some time the temp display starts going crazy and the led lights start blinking randomly.
This does not effect the set a/c or heat setting this is still working ok.
If you hit the off button the display comes back to normal for a while and starts acting up again.

Any ideas?????

Don

My 89 does the same thing. The only thing I have found in the last 6 years that might work is to remove it and clean the contacts on the unit (never done it though). Since pressing the buttons seems to temporarily fix it, I thought about getting some electronic contact spray and trying it around the buttons but never got around to doing it. When mine acts up I press every button on the unit and lastly the off button and it is OK for a while. It doesn't always seem to the the same button when it acts up.

I have an 88 that did the same thing. You have to clean the contacts on the circuit board inside the unit. I used an eraser and cleaned with a q tip and electonics cleaner. I think there was a tech tip that had a step by step on doing this. If that doesn't fix it, then look at your solder points on the board for cracks, and touch up with sodier.

The link starts off talking about fixing the digital dash but at the bottom it talks about the ecc.

OK IT WORKS
it takes about 1 1/2 hours to complete the job.
When you remove the ecc from the dash there is two spring clips located at the front of the unit. When you remove these clips the face of the ecc will pull off.
Use an eraser to clean the contacts on the circuit board. I aslo used contact cleaner on a Q tip to clean the contacts after cleaning with the eraser.
I sprayed the spring contacts on the face of the ecc and also the main plug at the back of the unit.

Good Luck with yours
