I just recently redid my A/C unit in my car. I replaced the compressor accumulator and orifice tube. A/C is running nice and cold while the car moving but as soon as i sit at a stop light for more then 3 min my car starts to heat up and the A/C turns hot.... I have recently discovered that my catilitic converter has gone bad but havnt gotten around to fixing it yet... not sure if that has any affect... please help
Sounds like the compressor clutch is disengaging, drive the car and get the A/C blowing cold and then park the car, open the hood while it is running and check to see if the clutch stays engaged when it blows hot.
If the fans are not coming on, or the condensor is dirt clogged the head pressure goes above max and the safety switches should protect the compressor from failure by cutting power to the a/c clutch.

Especially the dirt/clogged part. You can get a cheap guage at Auto Zone. Is the comp clutch on or cycling with the ac on? Is the low pressure line (big one) cold?

All good suggestions, another quick and dirty check would be to raise engine RPM in park or neutral or clutch depressed if manual (1500, don't go crazy) with the car stopped to see if it cools. If it cools with the RPM raised you are likely low on refrigerant since that will do nothing to improve air flow across the condenser, if it still doesn't cool look hard at restrictions to air flow as others have suggested. Good luck.
Have had this problem on another vehicle many years ago. Hard to remember exactly what we found but the system was evacuated. The freon removed, vacuum pumped down well and freon reinstalled. Sometimes the dryer/accumulator if clogged could cause poor flow this but you said it was just changed.
Knowing what the pressures are might give a clue. You might need a pro to check this if you don’t know what the numbers should be yourself.
Please fill out your profile so we know what kind of car you have. Makes things easier and you will get more exact answers.
.......what did the orifice tube look like?.....was it full of trash?.......could be that you have a blockage in the system.......if you have tried everything else, you may have to remove the refrigerant, flush the system (you can use cfc-20 flush for r-12 system - unsure if can be used for 134)...........reassemble, and try again......**recheck your pressure switches in the lines..
