The consensus here is most of us are leery of risking it.

Go to your NAPA auto parts counter and see the actual product cutways between a Fram oil filter and a Napa Gold filter.

Take the Fram Extra Guard PH8A, for example. This filter cartridge has a small outside diameter with a rather low filter element surface area (193 sqin), and features cardboard end caps that are glued in place.

The rubber anti-drainback valve seals the rough metal backplate to the cardboard end cap and easily leaks, causing dirty oil to drain back into the pan.

If you have a noisy valve train at startup, this filter is likely the cause. The bypass valves are plastic and are sometimes not molded correctly, which allows them to leak. The backplate has smaller and fewer oil inlet holes, which may restrict flow.

That should convince you Fram is ghetto garbage.

I have seen them fail 6 or more times first hand. I would not use one on a moped, if I got it for free.

Default Fram Filters

Been seeing bad press on them and they probably are not what they used to be but I have been using them for 15 + years on various vehicles for well overr 100K miles -no problems.

My reason for asking is related to my earliet thread "Oil Gushing out of Engine"

Check out my Link and please comment on my problem .I'm asking if the Fram could have caused this.

Thanx

I am aware of the link. I posted in it . At the very least, toss that filter.

So what Filter(s) would you suggest I use?

Spend the extra 5 bucks and get a Mobil1 filter. Sure is a lot cheaper than a Fram blowing apart, dumping all your oil and seizing the engine.

There is only 1 I would not use. That is the Fram. I usually use the purolator. K&N, Wix, Napa, etc. are all better choices. I would feel better if you dropped the adapter under the filter and carefully inspected it.

I've run Fram for years on all of my vehicles. Not a single problem.

The only filter I'd be less likely to use on one of my vehicles than a Fram would be a Group VII oil filter. I once installed one these on a vehicle and it blew off of the housing within seconds after start up. And yes, it was the proper filter for the application. Crossed it over by number to another brand and all was well.

I don't remember Fram getting a bad wrap until the last few years. The guys on my motorcycle board bad mouth them too. I admit I never had a problem. I just quit using them because it's not worth losing a motor.

I've never had a problem with a Fram that I know of. In other words, I'm not sure if the Fram filters I've used had anything to do with damage I've caused.

Look at it this way, how long does a filter stay in your car? usually not longer than 3000 miles. Is 3000 miles enough for any filter to fail?

I want to cut some of my filters open so I can see what's going on in there.

Mobil-1, AC Delco, Wix, and/or K&N - that's all you need.

It was welded on my Hemi(at least it seemed that way). Took me a couple hours to get that off, I ended up unbolting the engine adapter and clamping it in a vise and banging on a screwdriver I pushed through the side.
