If it is simply a roll pin, drive it out with an appropriately sized drift. My book shows a snap ring, just inboard of either spider pinion that have to be removed. The side yoke shafts are retained by select fit snap rings.
RACE ON!!!
PS. After doing some additional reading, it appears that the dual, snap rings, inboard of the spider pinions, was an early 1984 phenomenon and was recalled. The spider pin should be retained in the case by a roll pin, as most other manner of Dana differentials.
What are you trying to do? Remove the spider gears? or the axle yokes?
You need to remove the snap rings to get the yokes out, to get the side spider gears and carrier out.
I have a D44 that needs the side yokes installed, but not sure how to get the roll pin out.. The spider gears are still in there.. I don't think I can install the yokes withough removing the spider gears right?
It sounds like you may have bought a D44 set up with ring and pinion but no short axles from someone. When you drop your carrier the removal of the short axles will become obvious. You DO NOT need to remove the pin to install the short axles. You will need "very stout" snap ring pliers. There could be another catch! The snap rings are "selective" and set end play of the short axles. You may not be able to use the snap rings from your take out.
End play with minimum tolerances are preffered. I've got complete sets of D44 "selective" snap rings. I've PM'd you my email if you need anything.
