Default tb bypass hose

Is it possible to bypass the coolant hose going to the throttle body on an 89'? Are there any benefits? Should I just replace the hose?

Yes, just unplug the two hoses and mate them together with a pipe and 2 clamps.

Its a small gain, hardly noticable at all but its a common sense thing. You dont want hot coolant routed through the TB to preheat your incoming air, when heat soak of the intake is already a problem.

I highly recommend you consider the TB bypass for the fact that it "cleans up" a very busy area of your car. Vader86 had given you one option and I would like to give you another. Here is how I did the bypass on my 89:

Let me know if you have questions on this.

This type of engine finish is very easy to accomplish. All it takes is a little time and some finish materials. Finish materials are zinc chromate primer and Rusteoleum Hi Temp paint that you can buy at Home Depot......now you can't paint the engine parts while they are on the car

Bummer.. what if one wanted to go for the oem c2-c3 look?

Thanks for the info! What would you clean them with first? My whole bay is very..... greasy, grimmy, road debris, Former owners really didn't give the car much attention under the hood... Altho there is 4 chrome pieces. OK back to the Q, How/what cleans the plenuim and runners the best?

Step 1, remove the two hoses leading coolant into and out of the TB
Step 2, grab pvc pipe, stick it in the two hoses
Step 3, use two clamps to tighten each end.

Done.

Or you can do what alot of us do, and replace both hoses with one single hose, any long piece of 5/8" heater hose will do

Another benefit it that it makes it a lot easier to remove the TB in the future

The original hose goes from the firewall to the TB and then to the intake so another possibility for bypass is to run one length of hose from the firewall directly to the intake. This makes for a nice clean install with no connections.

Depending what you how you run it, ours 87'went from the intake and passes behind the AC (radial unit)and then to the fitting on the fender. Looks factory and have modified the passage on the bottom of the TB so just have the IAC there. WRO

The hose I believe was 5/8" got about 2' and it fit fine. Did bend the fitting a little by the inner fender well so it would not kink. If you use a fitting try to find a brass or steel one I have seen some of the plastic fail. WRO

I used a couple of rubber caps from Home Depot to cover the open holes. Don't remember the size right off, 5/8 I think.

I bought the rubber caps from Autozone. They actually come in a small pack that has the different sizes you need. The total cost was around $4.00. Mine is a 94 but I'm sure we are basically talking about the same hoses. It sure did clean up the area a little bit and one less thing to worry about dripping on the opti.

I see most of you that talked about the bennies of this mod live in the deep south. I live way up in the cold Northeast and the temps are starting to get a little brisk in the morning, will the throttle butterflies ice up in the spring and fall?

Thanks,

Adam.

Back in the 60's 70's I drove mg's healy's and z cars all with su's very similar to a TB (early TB?) never a problem with icing (not much heat either). As far as it goes I don't think unless you live past the norther border you should have a problem. It is manly for prehaeting for better emissions. WRO
