What causes the popping sound in the exhaust? Its getting frequent with mine. Almost to the point of annoying.
When does it occur? Could you provide me with a little more information?
Mine pops when I let off the throttle after heavy acceleration at times. This started after my header install. I was always told it was a by-product of a free flowing exhaust.
yes, same here. The noise comes after I let off the gas, but I can't say after heavy acceleration, its after any acceleration. But its just becoming more and more popping, sounds like I'm shooting people on the street, and I do live near the army base
There is a different loud exhaust on there, but can't tell you what kind, was on there already when I got the car.
Free flow exhaust may be the reason. after i removed my cats, and installed muffler eliminators, my exhaust pops a bit as well. keep in mind that is after rompin on it.. if you could get the sound to us maybe we could verify if it is somthin different than ours?

I have an '89 with the same motor (L98). When I removed the front cats, installed a larger front "Y" pipe, and larger rear section, the exhaust popped liked crazy. Mostly only during decel in the warm-up cycle.
Took it to a dealer and asked how to stop that. They said it couldn't be done via conventional tuning. They suggested a tuner or to put the front cats back on.
Others have added that the electronic ignition (computer) is slow on these years. To me, I'm thinking the injectors might not respond fast enough when letting off the gas. If so, the mixture would be too rich for a micro-second -- causing a pop on decel.
Front cats help this by lighting off unburnt mixture in the exhaust. Aftermarket exhaust that eliminates those cats may create the problem you describe.
If you have front cats (and the rear one), your plugs and wires are O.K., then you might consider an MSD module. You may even want to consider this in lieu of redoing the exhaust. An MSD increases the spark duration and intensity. This will do a more complete burn -- in the motor -- so it won't pop in your exhaust.
A "tuner" might also be able to get it out but you'd have to ask one.
Well I got this car in May, and it hardly made a pop. Then, after a month, when it started riding irregular, the pops increased. Connection?
I've wrote about the problem in previous posts, but still haven't had the time to check it out.
- After 10 minutes of riding, starts making alot of noise, like a click click click sound (but loud). If you're too easy on the clutch it will stall, especially in reverse.
Might want to check your header gaskets too. leaky exhaust will cause popping and the clicking sound maybe valve noise because of the leak.
Any cold air getting through to the hot exhaust will cause popping
I had it happen on a car once where one of the circle welds wasnt good and allowed a small leak
