Default My turn....

I figured a 4L60E w/117K on it wouldn't last much longer w/ a stroker in front of it. Well last night on the way home from work I nailed it on a straight stretch of country road. Now, no high or OD. The good news is I just bought a low mileage unit at a good price. The bad news is, I gotta go to Michigan to get it and some other stuff.

I drove around without 3rd gear for about 2 months in my L98 when the 700r4 went out.

The GM engineers designed the drive train to be reliable with the engine they also designed. THEN some dufus comes along and ups the horsepower by 2 times and expects the rest of the drivetrain to take it!

Rather than driving all the way to Michigan, you should do a 6l80e conversion so I'll know how to do it when I blow my tranny...

To bad about the trany but glad to here you have a plan in place already. Don't forget to send the converter off to get a good going through before sticking it in the new trany

It would be if that wasn't one of the smaller parts I'm picking up! I can stop in and visit some of the family on the way too, so that's always nice. I'm going to stick the replacement trans in the Vette while I build the original one. Although I've been in automotive repair my whole working life, it's been primarily large trucks. So I've never actually completely rebuilt an automatic before, zillions of manuals from 3 to 13 speeds but never an auto. I knew I'd be building it soon and talked with Pete some awhile back. He said the 4L60E is actually simpler than the 700R due to some of the functions being electronic instead of mechanical. Also I've got the trade manual for the trans so between that and Pete's advice I'm going to give it a shot. Of course it'll get any and all beefing deemed necessary for my needs.

A bit harsh to hear but true. I get a big kick out of the companies that"guarantee" it will take 700 or more horsepower. They( in my opinion) are lying, or know something I have yet to figure out. I have sent out 2 recently that are going behind what I feel is big power cars. I was honest enough to tell them it may or may not live. The good news is that the hard parts in the trans seem to take the big power fine. This allows guys like me to beef up the soft parts to hold.

If I can do it, anyone can. With your ability and backround, no problem. Any advise I can give, I will. No secrets here.

Thanks for the kind words. That means a ton coming from you. I'd just as soon send it to you. But I've spent so much on the newest engine and other stuff lately, I've got to save a few hundred where I can.

Naw, I'm saving for an LT4 coupe to satisfy that jones. And compared to this car, it'll remain relatively stock. Then I'll have a Vette for every mood!

Sorry to hear of your troubles. While we are on the subject, is there a transmission that can be swapped out for the 4L60E that can take more abuse? I see raptor transmission is working on a swap to the 4L80E. How much more can those handle if built well?

Thanks

Just so you know, I have a 4L60E sitting in my garage with less than 51,000 miles on it. I don't need it.
I may sell it soon.
