Mercon III (same thing as IIe i believe). I used Mobil 1 ATF.. kind of expensive, but it does the job and doesn't break down under high temps because it is fully synthetic.

I used Mobil-1 ATF in my 90. Excellent smooth shifting. I would think it would do equally as weel in your 86. Redline also makes some excellent products too.
