The tach wire is white. It connect to the distrubitor (TACH), then the tach filter, and connects to another connector... then disappears in the firewall

Runs through the Big Connector behind the Battery to Pin C5 at the Cluster. For '88 it should be in Cavity E1 at the Connector which should be the 3rd row down from the top, right side. This is the Cluster Signal only. I'd think your ignition would work without it, but then you wouldn't have a display. ECM ignition is a 4 wire harness and the EST signal is a white wire to PIN D4 at the ECM. It runs through the right side of the Firewall, behind the head.

is that tach filter silver and looks like a barrel about the size of a 1/4"drive9/16 socket?

Description sounds right. Wrapped in a metal holder with a place for a bolt.

That is the terminal I.D. at the ECM connection. You will need a FSM to locate it's exact location.

Yes, the tach filter should be grounded. Either on the left rear cylinder head or on the left side bell housing. Some members report that the tach filter is mounted in either location. Mine is on the head.
