Default Weight Reduction (who has the lightest engine)

This is a little different thread about weight reduction because I want to focus directly on the engine. What you have done to reduce weight to your C4 engine? I am sure most people have not weighed their engines but those of you who have been concerned about reducing pounds may have found something I have overlooked. If you have any ideas about reducing engine weight I would love to hear from you with your ideas, tips and tricks.

Thanks,

NitrousSam

Well right now, I have the intake and heads off, that reduced the weight a little bit!

A friend of mine runs a low 6 second vette. Every piece in or on the engine is lightened. Even the an fittings are milled down to lighten the load. Car weighs 1850 lbs with him in it.

Is your friend a forum member? Can you share any further details about things he has done to cut weight? You have my attention because I am trying to build a 2500 lb C4 and I have tweaked most of the car and now it engine weight reduction time. I have the basics done to the engine but I know there are people who have gone to the extreme...I need some extreme tips and tricks.

Thanks,

Sam

He is not a forum member. He is the owner of Jensen Engine Tech in Nescopeck Pa.
His car is extreme. Carbon fiber body, tube chassis, and a 427 cube twin turbo small block making 2300 hp. Every time I look under the hood, I find something new. Even the back sides of the door handles are milled out on the bridgeport.

The electric water pump is a tad lighter too

Valve train weight can be reduced a tad by careful selection of components..

Run the engine down one quart of oil.....2 pounds or so

Smaller size oil filter?????

Smaller coolant overflow....smaller radiator...

Alternator, power steering pumps(electric?).....

You need to talk to the guys that build sprint car engines. One shop in TX that has a CNC block lightening program is Wells Racing Engines
(www.wellsracing.com). Go to their web site and click on the "video" link and they have a video of their block lightening process.

Good luck,
Dan

If you can find any photos of this car that would be great. Weight reduction in my C4 has been a huge priority for me and it sounds like I can learn something from your friend.

For us cavemen that are stuck in GEN III technology, is there an aluminum block with a 1 piece rear main seal?

I think his website is www.jensenenginetech.com,
but I will double check. Pretty sure he has a photo gallery on the site. I will check.
Edit: link is wrong, don't click it. I will find out the correct one.

i managed to get 13 lbs out of my original 86E engine block, mainly using an angle grinder and drill.....

i also cut 3-4 lbs out of the original TPI manifold base as well, before i switched to a miniram.

last time i weighed my car, it was down to 3,040 lbs, curb weight with a bout 1/4 tank of fuel. still had the A/C, and original 16X9.5 wheels on it...

The car of mine that you have already seen only weighs 2700lbs and it has the stock power seats, speakers in the doors and all the lights are op[erational, even the horns.

For a starting weight reference point, what does a stock TPI engine block weigh? I've seen figures between 142 and 180 lbs. What are they really?
