Default Pulling steering wheel need advise

My turn signal switch had died on my 88. I have odered the switch and plan to change it next weekend. I have a Chilton Manual. I know I have to pull the steering wheel and remove and replace the switch.

I have no experience with this and any advise is greatly appreciated.

Yea, you'll need a couple of tools: cam/spring compressor and wheel puller. Your best bet would be a Helms manual. If you email me i can send you the section in pdf...from my 87... that should definately help.

I sent you an email. I've been looking at the Chilton Manual. It says I need some special tools. It looks complicated. Maybe I should bring it to a specialist. Electrical stuff scares me.

It is actually not that bad once you get the wheel off (need the puller at Sears) you will see the following picture, you will then need another tool at Sears (~locking plate tool) this will compress the plate in to allow to remove the retainer clip, this then all pulls out and you are left with some screws to remove for the blinker and cruise switch, disconnect the harness below, and tie a string to it in order to aid in re-installation before pulling the wires out. Then assemble in the reverse. I hope I did not leave to much out.

Great pic, thanks. I'll get the tools at Sears. If the part comes in I'll start this weekend. How about the carpeting below the steering wheel? Do you remove that? It looks like the connetions for the switch are at the bottom of the steering shaft. Do I remove the cover that goes around it? Or do you snake it through?

Carpet stays put, just remove the black panel that has the light on it, three screw across the front and a nut by the brake pedal, stick your head up in there and you will see how the wires connect to the harness.
