I'm trying to understand the AIR system...I want to remove it:
The pump goes (obviously)...replaced by the polished bracket. The small black "box" on the passenger side, next to the throttle body will be removed. What about the exhaust manifold? The small tubes that connect to each pipe on the manifold....what should I do? They connect, one on each side of the engine, to tubes running parallel to the engine.
Bottom line, what do you leave on/take off to make this removal complete.
If anyone has any pictures of their engine compartments with the AIR pump and all related parts removed I would greatly appreciate it.
I chose to NOT use the rubber caps that came with the kit...instead, take the black check valves off the exhaust a.i.r pipes on the exhaust manifolds and install 1/2 inch threaded pipe caps you can find in hardware stores in the plumbing section.Be sure to get the cast iron/steel caps.
Put a little anti seize on the threads and use large vise grips to tighten them down since theyre round in shape.
This really cleans it up and allows easier access to the first 2 spark plugs on the motor.
Yeah I was going to say to leave the one way check valves on since they only flow one way. But Bill has a good idea too. Other people have mentioned to give a little attention to the part of the pipe that goes into the exhaust stream in the manifold itself. Grinding this little pipe down may help the flow. The egr might be tricky. I can't fool around with that stuff here in Cal.
There should be 2 black valves near the throttle body if it's like my 86. One had an electrical connection, the other didn't. There is also a tube that connects the two exhaust manifolds, it runs across the front of the motor under the TB. You may have to remove some things to get it out.
The path is air pump to black valve(s) which then splits off in 2 directions: one to exhaust manifolds and the other to the main cat. Just follow the plumbing and make sure you cap off the exhaust manifold tubes and the main converter side inlet pipe (if you still have a cat) so you won't have an exhaust leak. Also make sure to cap off the vacuum line(s) that were hooked to the black valves. The EGR is a separate system, it runs off the #8 cylinder exhaust, whereas the air system uses 1-7.
I will try to get some pics, I don't think I have any "before" shots though.
What do you do with the wiring harness plugs...it looks like the black "box" that's located on the passenger side of the throttle body is connected to the ECM...what do you do with this connection? (this entire piece is removed...correct?)
The balck box is just an electically controlled valve(s). Unplug both and tuck them out of the way. The both have 12v on one pin. The other pin(s), goes to the ECM.
