Welcome Mike! First post huh. Well the preferred way to hit 400 seems to be a 383 stroker build. You might want to do a search on that. I have never done it but many have. I'm sure they will be along to comment.

400rwhp or 400chp? if its 400chp, 350 cubes is plenty.

Ported heads (w/ r.rockers), matching cam,52mm throttle body, full exhaust (w/cats) and a good tune will get you just over 400 at flywheel.

Default Same boat!

Hey, Mike! I'm in the same boat as you. I have a '95 with 108k. My step-dad is a motorhead who has built several chevy racecars. I told him I was going to rebuild my engine (err..have it done) and he told me to look at getting a crate engine. He said that nowdays, you can get a crate that is ready to go for the same price as rebuilding with a kit. In addition, I would be getting all new parts instead of mixing new with old. My questions are: Is buying a crate going to be as good as my LT1, or is it a lot of extra weight? I saw a link on eBay for an 383 LT1 for $2,079 ([URL=http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LT1-383-SHORTBLOCK-new-93-97-SMALL-BLOCK-CHEVY_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33620QQ ihZ020QQitemZ300068927654QQtcZphoto[/URL]) and it sounds great. I read on the forum about it being a pain to switch from an LT1 to an LS1. I am basically wanting about 450hp on the ground. But I also use it for a daily driver, and I HATE Nitrous (save it for the imports).
What do you guys think?

Rookie,
Ben

Welcome to the addiction, Fill out your profile it will help everyone else help you. Is your car an automatic ? Rather than shoot for a horsepower tell us how quick you want it to be. You might be suprised how quick a LT1 Corvette can be with much less horsepower. Do you really want an 11 second car ? Building a 12 second LT1 doesn't cost alot of money but trying to go 11's will cost a bunch.

We don't really have enough information to answer your question(s). Here's a couple basic ones that will help us to help you:

What's the budget?

How do you use the car?

What does the car not do now that you want it to do after you mod it?

Is there any problems with the car now? You mentioned it had over 100K on it, but does everything work properly?

Is it a 6 speed or an auto?

Do you want to drag race, auto cross, go 200 MPH, or what?

Are there any specific goals for the car? My goal was car that would turn mid 11's at the track and be docile enough for my Mom to take to get groceries. What's your goal?

Let us know what you would like to accomplish and we'll see if we can help you with a game plan.

LE2 H/C plus supporting mods is usually around 380-400 RWHP.

Spend some time at the LT1 forum at camaroz28.com. Much better source for information on building LTx engines than this place.

Default More info 400HP

Sorry all yes Iam looking for 400 whp.
My budget is open and right now the car has a oil leak where I don't
know if its a gasket. It leaks when running and on the left cat.
The car runs great the problem is the small oil leak.
As for the trans its a 4L80E auto. I like top end speed. I know this
car is fast i think 200mph would be nice with the right mods.
Thank you for all the help.

383 Stroker LT1 engine would work. You can do a crate engine swap if you like.
Look at this site for some ideas. www.precisionengine.com

I don't think an oil leak is reason to rebuild your engine. It may just need the intake resealed. Although it's not gonna give ya anymore horsepower. If it's got a 4L80E in it, you already know pretty much about modifications.
