You might have to loosen just the top plenum up and not have to take it out all the way. We have done it several times with no problem just be sure to use a little grease on the o-rings and don't worry about the cir-clip locks. wro87
You do have to remove the plenum and at least the right side runner & loosen the left side...just as well to remove them both. It's easier to get to the lower Torx bolts w/ the valve covers off too. But your choice. There is one Torx bolt on each runner that is located behind the runner. The left side near to the fire wall. The right nearest to the front. The left side is easiest to get to if you use a 1/4" drive socket w/ a Torx bit (I have a Torx bit that I've epoxied into a 1/4" socket just for this purpose) & long extention that you can slip around the fuel rail, FPR and distributor cluster.
If this is your first time removing the rail for injector replacement, be careful when you reinstall that piece. Many have had vacuum leaks from there (I did).
Do you have to take the top plenum off to replace the injectors, or can you do it without. What is involved. Thanks in advance, Jim.
I had to take the plenum and atleast the right runner off to get the fuel rail up. I went ahead a removed both runners along with the plenum. Four 10mm bolts hold the fuel rail in place. Just wiggle and pull to get the injectors out attached to the fuel rail. This can be done before removing the fuel lines. With the rail up, prime the system. This way you can see if you have a leaky injector.
Try any of the suggestions, but this is what I had to do just recently. Yes, the 87 still has the CSV and I found no vacuum anywhere around it at least on my 86 that is. (85-88 have CSV's)
Oh, I didn't have to remove the valve covers to get the runners out. I have a EGR pipe delete.
