Where can I get a dependable, long lasting brake booster for my 1994 Vette? The diaphram inside of it is blown and I plan on doing the replacement myself.
I did this a few months ago. The best option is new from a discount GM dealer. You can also rebuild it. You'll need a to get a rebuild kit and a new vacuum piston from GM.
When you go to remove the old one, undo the bolts under the dash from outside the vehcile. Much easier than inside.
Just replaced my last weekend. I took the seat out to have easier access under the dash. It is a fairly easy job.
I bought a rebuilt one for $100.00 from Discount Auto Parts. It comes with a life time warranty. Also it is made of metal. I thought it was the wrong one until I read the paper inside with a photo of my old booster saying this is the correct replacement. Works great!!!!! Good Luck.
:D
So it sounds like I can get a decent brake booster for $100.00. That's comforting.I can't believe a friend of mine stated it would cost me $800.00-$1000.00 the brake booster alone. Buwhahaha! Thanks for the replies fellas.
Mine just crapped on me the other day too.:mad Wow 100$ is much better than Eckler's 283$. Is there a phone number or somthing i can get in touch with them with? Does the metal look like crap? Do you have to drain the brake fluid to change it? Please let me know.
Did mine a few weeks ago! Not a bad job. Took about three hours to do the booster and the master taking my time. I too paid about $100 from Shucks with a lifetime warrenty. I was hesitant to buy from a discount parts place like Shucks, but whe I found out the remanufactured unit was from A1 Cardone I realized it should be a good unit. In my opinion the steel remanufactured unit dosn't look quite as good as the factory unit, but then again, it dosn't cost $300 either.
No, you do not have to drain the master to change the booster. At lease not on my 87!

Leave the seat in and do it from the outside. I did the seat thing first couple times and then discovered its easier to reach in from outside of the car.
I ment to say in my first post 'save your old booster' if you get a new one.
My booster came from A1. They sent three with the wrong length rod and one that was completely wrong. I finally had to send my rod to them to get the right one. The unit cost me 150 with my unit going to them for the core.
