I recently noticed some paint bubbling on the hood of my 85. I took it to the body shop and he asked me to pop the hood. Directly under the bad spot there was a greasy/oil spot. It looks like something was/is throwing some oil up there around the a/c compresser. The paint guy said that the oil has blead/seeped through the fiberglass and is causing the paint to bubble. He also said that if it were repaired it would probably happen again because the oil is in the fiberglass and the only fix is a new hood($1600 just for the hood.) This is not an option. My questions are; has anyone else ever experienced this and what did you do? I could live with it as long as it does not get any worse. It is only noticable from a certain angle, under certain lighting. I will clean all of the grease off and prevent any further grease from getting on there but is there any way to draw the grease out that is in there already?
Finally, I think everyone should check under there hoods for grease spots and clean them off right away so you don't have a similar problem. Thanks, Guy
agreed, i find it hard to believe the oild would seep through the fiberglass, i believ that is epoxy impregnated fiberglass, i could be wroing but it would take the opile quite some time to work its way through it especially with gravity against it. if it is however the problem then they are correct, you will not be able to seperate the oil from the fiberglass without cutting the spot out and having new material put in its place. this would be somehting you might look at.... but it is a difficult task to do and should be left to the pros who know they can do it well!
I forgot to mention that this was the shop that painted the hood back in May. Was he just making this up so they would not have to repaint it for free? I tended to believe him because the grease was in the same spot as the paint bubbles. I agree with the gravity part, it seems funny the grease would go up. Any fiberglass experts? Thanks, Guy
Grease and oil will not penetrate fiberglass. The only thing that comes close to doing that is silicone, but that just bonds to the surface I believe. The paint shop guy is throwing out :bs to avoid taking responsibility for a mistake.
