Default o-ringing the block?

How important is this? I am looking at a shortblock setup from 2 different companys, and one o-rings the block, the other does not. By the way, this is a blower motor, and for now, im not sure how much boost I will eventually end up at.

If you are planning on running high boost levels that would be the only reason I would even consider doing o rings. Properly done they will seal very well, however if not, you are going to have a lot of expensive machine shop labor to repair the screw ups.

I have a couple cars out there running upwards of 14 psi of boost with conventional head gaskets and using studs to secure the cylinder heads. For more boost I would run MLS gaskets with a properly machined set of heads and block. If you can control detonation with proper tuning or with the addition of meth injection you can easily run conventional head gaskets with studs and run plenty of boost for any streetable application.

The compression will be around 9.2 The motor I am looking at is here http://www.golenengineservice.com/ht...rt_blocks.html The supercharger version has 5.7 rods vs. 6.0 in the non supercharger version. Of course the pistons are different, but other then the o-ring of the block, I dont know if there are any other differences in the motors.
Tom, I am going to try and contact them and see if they will build a block without the o-ring and if so, how much.
By the way, I hope boost will be around 6-8 psi, with my base kit, but want to be able to up that at a future date. I plan on using the meth injection kit as well.

O-rings are for using copper head gaskets. If you o-ring the block you're also going to have to have matching reciever grooves machined into the heads.

I would not have a production type engine shop handle this type of work. I also wouldn't recommended orings to any type of street type car. Even a hot street/strip deal.

MLS gaskets and head studs are the ticket. Proper head surface finish and block deck surface finish is critical. Using a sealer (even though it isn't recommended) adds a level of security for slightly rough deck surfaces.

I spoke to Chad at Golen about this. Basicially they will build the motor for $200.00 less if they do not o-ring the block. He told me they have sold 50-75 of these and have had no problems with the o-ring procedure. Also, the heads do not have to be o-ringed. But he agreed that the motor, for my purposes will probably be fine without it. I plan on starting around 6 psi and hope to get up to 10-15 in time with upgrades.
He does suggest that I change cams. The one they use, has 214-224 dur. 531-568 lift and 115 sep.
With a set of Lloyd Elliott heads, it mad 700 bhp. and 670 tq. Also, this was with 12 lbs boost.
