When you say (gears) do you mean ring and pinion only, or do you mean diff. assy.? If it is the diff. assy., then yes they should interchange. If it is just the ring and pinion I believe they will both have to have matching carriers IE. the 2 series or 3 series.

Also, if you were considering a total 3rd member swap, the width of the rear was different. (narrower) That's why the offset of the rear wheels is different on '88+ cars.

Have to be careful here, the earlier Dana 36 carriers had different camber bracket holes and I don't remember what year they were changed.
