Default Differential ???

I think I blew the diff on my 86 4+3speed Vette its been making a weird humming noise the last couple of weeks and just last night it got real bad and the nut that holds the yolk to the diff backed off causing my drive shaft to pull forward, car wouldn't move obviously.

I have pulled the drive shaft out of the car and have the car on jackstands I can spin the rear wheels backwards but they wont spin forward.

Do you guys think this is a sign that the gears inside the diff are shot ?????

If so where can I get a good deal on a new diff with gears already in it so I can bring it home and pop it in ??? The price at ecklers seems a bit steep, but if thats what I gotta pay then I guess I have no choice.

Thanks for any and all info

Why don't you go ahead and drop the rear end and take the batwing off? You'll have to do it anyway and you might see something helpful. Sorry to hear about your situation. Good luck.

Pull the complete differential and send it off to a shop that specializes in this type of repair, sounds like the pinion gear is not meshed with the ring or something broke. As mentioned above you are going to have to pull the batwing and start looking for problems.

Take it to a shop that specializes in rear ends. I would think that would be your cheapest and easiest option.

Now that is is out, did you visually see any problems? What was it if you could tell.
