Default " rear diff vent mod please? "

hi there guys,
i saw a few places like ecklers, corvette central and so on sell a
REAR DIFF VENT!
it looks like a small rubber/plastic tube/filter on top and just slides or bolts on top of diff housing that would have to be drilled.

does any one know what this is meant for please?

what benefits would it be by using one?

may be let out some diff housing preasure i guess?
its only worth $10 or so for it!
cheers

I've never heard of that before. Do you have a link? I have seen the kit for putting in a drain plug. A filter for on top of the diff? For $10???

Glen, stop using bold letters...it doesn't help.

Many vehicles have differential vents. These vent the entire axle assembly (solid rear axles). I'm thinking that if the Dana doesn't vent the D36's and D44's, it's because they are just the differential case, not the entire rear axle (independant rear suspension).
I'd have to think that if the D36/44 needed a vent, Dana would have designed it in. Save your ten bucks.

Default Dana 36 & 44 are vented

Both 36 & 44 cases have a vent cap installed on the top of the case from the factory.

Trust me, it's there...

They did. For 1984 - 1990 both D36 and D44, the part number is 3738462. This is not a mod. ALL diffs have a vent. Another "trick of the week" down the drain.

I've seen many differentials and transmissions that have a tube from the vent port on the case to a higher position.
I would think, for a vehicle that is used off-road and in high water, it would be a good idea to have a "snorkel" vent, but for a Corvette, I don't think it would be necessary, unless you are going to live in New Orleans.

Here are the pictures. This is out of my '89.

This picture is the inside of the batwing. As you can see there is a baffle keeping the flung gear lube from hitting the vent directly.

This is the outside. It is on top of the batwing and to the pasenger side. Hope this helps. Tim

I notice you edited that post, labeling your edit a "correction of error". The majority of the post is still erroness. They all have the vent as many others have said allready. Regardless of whether or not they are a diff centre or a complete rear axle, the lubricant inside will still expand and contract with temperature variation.
