I think I'm losing it...the MAF on my '89 is making a hissing sound just like when a spot on the engine has a vacuum leak. It's coming from below the sensor where the wiring plugs into the unit. I know this sounds odd, but I'm sure that that is where the sound is coming from because I've isolated it using tubing and listening carefully all around the area of the sensor. I've taken the MAF off and looked it over -- no obvious signs of why it would make this sound. Got any ideas what I'm looking at here?
Yep, check where the MAF connects to the air ducting on both sides. You may an air leak just after the sensor that is unmetered.
I'll check that, but I've connected it as usual and not had this problem before. Maybe I should try wrapping it w/some sort of tape to see if this helps? Or maybe I should wrap it some other way or w/something else?

The coupler material stiffens up when it's cold. Adjust and tighten it while it is warm. Also make sure the underneath side the MAF housing isn't cracked.
Well, just to be sure it isn't some electronic thing (I don't know how it could be), you might first disconnect the harness and see if it goes away. If not - everything else suggested though you might also look for cracks, particularly where the harness plugs in.

Using a magnifying glass and high power light source check the housing for cracks. You may also want to try using a sealant around the parting line of the electronics module.
But first ensure there are no cracks in the intake ducting.
